Hydrocephalus: Understanding the Condition and Exploring Complementary Approaches with TheTole
What Is Hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition that occurs when an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up within the brain’s ventricles. CSF normally surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord, while also helping remove waste and maintain a healthy environment for the nervous system.
When CSF does not circulate or drain properly, it can accumulate and increase pressure inside the skull. Hydrocephalus can occur at any age, including in newborns, children, adults and older individuals.
The condition can have different causes, and its symptoms may vary depending on the person's age, the underlying cause and how quickly the fluid accumulates.
Common Types of Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus may be broadly classified into several types:
1) Congenital hydrocephalus
This develops before birth and may be associated with abnormalities affecting brain development or CSF circulation.
2) Acquired hydrocephalus
This develops later in life and may be associated with conditions such as brain infections, tumors, bleeding or head injuries.
3) Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)
This generally occurs in older adults and may involve changes in walking, balance, bladder control and cognitive function.
4) Communicating hydrocephalus
CSF can still flow between the ventricles, but its absorption into the bloodstream may be impaired.
5) Non-communicating hydrocephalus
A blockage within the CSF pathways prevents normal circulation of the fluid.
Possible Symptoms
Symptoms can differ considerably between individuals.
In babies, signs may include:
1) Rapid increase in head size
2) Vomiting
3) Poor feeding
4) Irritability
5) Excessive sleepiness
6) Developmental difficulties
In older children and adults, possible symptoms may include:
1) Headaches
2) Nausea or vomiting
3) Blurred or double vision
4) Balance or coordination difficulties
5) Difficulty walking
6) Memory or concentration changes
7) Urinary problems
8) Fatigue or changes in alertness
For older adults with normal pressure hydrocephalus, walking difficulties, cognitive changes and bladder problems can sometimes occur together.
Because these symptoms can also occur with other neurological conditions, proper medical assessment is important.
TheTole Herbal Approach
TheTole also incorporates herbal practices within its TCM-based approach. In TCM, herbs may be selected according to an individual's constitution and specific pattern of imbalance.
However, herbal products should be used carefully, particularly for individuals taking prescription medicines or managing complex neurological conditions. Herbal products should not be used as a substitute for prescribed medication or medically recommended procedures.
A qualified practitioner should be informed about all medications, supplements and other health products being used to help reduce the possibility of unwanted interactions.
